Shortening the Buzzsaw by CaldwellB734 Shortening the Buzzsaw by CaldwellB734
I've always wondered why there weren't more variants of the infamous MG42 since it was such a successful design, one that is still used today as the H&K MG3. The main modification I've always imagined is shortening the barrel and lightening the design, turning it into a SAW-style weapon like the M249. So I did just that:

1) Standard WW2 MG42

2) MG42K - Shortened barrel

3) MG42CP - Ultra-short barrel, a synthetic handguard and modified stock, and high-strength polymer parts to lessen the weight

Shortest one's a beauty. Though I ask, "Where does the ammo box, the belt-feeding box magazine, go?"

me personally, i'd imagine that ammo box would go where it went in life. in life it had a 75 round ammo 'drum' mounted on the side.

I think before HK was a thing, CETME did a short version but it wasn't that short.

I'll have to look into that. If you have any information please post it, I'd love to know more.

Because the original was perfect for it's intended role.

That tiny model should have an HK23E style of foregrip, because without it, the thing will effectively uncontrollable in every sense of the term. 7.92x57mm IS has a massive amount of recoil at that ROF.......just something to consider.

Otherwise, pretty cool stuff.

Practicality certainly wasn't something I had in mind, this was definitely just kind of a "just 'cause" gun, but the HK23 handguard is a good idea! Lemme work with that

The second variant should probably be "MG42K", as that better fits the German naming scheme.

You do know the MG42 ejects out the bottom.

Yes of course, the handguard is built to accommodate the ejection port and the shooter's hand rests near the front of it so the brass will fall out without being inhibited. Sorry, I forgot to explain that in the description.
